It sometimes feels hopeless.....

conversation between my DD and DH:

DD: "Daddy, someone's coming over?"

DH: "No. Why?"

DD: "Then why are you cleaning [the bathroom]?"

Ahhhh! :(

DS 2 and his health problems

I came to the realization that I had not posted on my blog about what is going on with DS 2 and his health. I had not mentioned the story at all. Why this is such a surprise to me considering I rarely blog, I don't know. But here is what took place in November.

The Sunday before Thanksgiving, we got home from church and DS2 laid down on my lap and took a nap for about 2 hours. That is a rarity since he stopped taking naps by the time he was 2 and he was almost 3 1/2 at the time. (Anyways) He woke up with a fever of 104. I gave him some ibuprophen, thinking maybe he was teething, and he drifted in and out of sleep for the remainder of the day. His fever had broken within another hour or so. The next day, he
The pediatrician originally thought he had a bladder infection but the test came back from the lab neg for infection but positive for crystals. So that sent us to rainbow Babies in Cleveland. In the meantime, DS2 had had a hard time "going" and said that it felt like someone is hammering his private when he goes. :( So the doc was puzzled because there are no one on either side of family that has kidney problems. He ordered an ultrasound and did some bloodwork. If the ultrasound doesnt show any stones, he said that doesnt mean there arent any, but they are too small to show up then he will have to do a CT scan. But he doesn't want to expose Ds2 to radiation if he doesnt have to.

The ultrasound didn't show any stones! Thank you Jesus! And although the doctor said its pretty likely that he passed a stone or maybe more at the time it was hurting to go potty, by the time he got the results of the test and saw us a month later, the pain was gone and he didn't think that there was an immediate reason to put DS2 through a CT scan. However, the lab work showed that his levels of calcium in his body were off the charts high. And, the chemical in our bodies that breaks down calcium so it can be passed through our kidneys and out of our bodies - DS2 doesn't have nearly enough of that chemical. So, doctor said he was a "kidney stone waiting to happen." What that meant, was quite complicated. That required a lifestyle change for the whole family. First, reducing calcium in the diet isn't as simple as that. Studies have shown that reducing calcium directly from the diet causes our bodies to pull calcium out of our bones to make up for the lack in our diet. Instead, we must reduce our sodium, which, in turn, reduces just enough calcium to make a difference. The doctor didn't state this, but I assume that by us trying to reduce the calcium directly, we reduce way too much. Using the indriect method of reducing sodium also reduces trace amounts of calcium. I have learned this from label-reading. Funny thing, how I have to read every label for my son's health when I hate those labels! I always make sure whether it be box or can that they are turned around so I don't have to look at them. I think they are ugly! I know, I know. It's a ridiculous thing to say, its just a label, but it is ugly! Now, I have to look at them. :( LOL! The doctor said DS2 needs to have no more than 1500 mg of sodium per day in his diet, and that it would be much easier for us to change the eating habits of the whole family than just one member. Reason being -- I have to make nearly everything from scratch. He also has to try to drink 6 8oz glasses of water each day. And, we have to give him 2 tsp of Bicitra 3 times each day in 2 oz of juice. This medicine is to keep the calcium crystals from binding together and becoming stones. It doesn't reduce the calcium, but just keeps it small and hopefully passable.
Oh my! I cannot believe how long it's taken me to post!! Well, without further adieu, here are the happenings around our house:

We finished up math for the year yesterday, although we will continue working on +, - , x and division (is there a symbol on the keyboard for that?) anyways. We will be finishing our other classes here and there in the next 4 weeks. Are you all wrapping up as well?
DH still doesn't have a job. We do have food stamps now, which is a huge blessing! And God has been blessing us through generous people at our church. We know He will reveal to us the perfect job in His timing! :)
I started reading a wonderful book yesterday. Its a daily devotional that you may be interested in. Its called 'Sparkling Gems from the Greek' by Rick Renner. Its '365 Greek Word Studies for Every Day of the Year to Sharpen Your Understanding of God's Word.' I have learned a lot in two days. It is very eye-opening when you understand the complete definition of certain words. But it is a HUGE book!!! Well over 900 pages (actually, if you count the English to Greek, Greek to English Dictionary plus the index, its over 1000 pages.) And its like 3 and 1/2 pages per day. The book is hardcover, and about the size of a dictionary! But it is so worth it! I got it as a gift from a mentor/friend from church.
Curt says the book is crazy big, but he just finished reading his first book in 20 years. (besides the Bible) He is involved in men's ministry at church and is taking a class on how to be a better husband and father, and for the class, they have to read a total of 10 or 12 books in one year. He is going crazy just trying to complete the required 4 chapters each week! LOL! I know its a big challenge for him, but when he completed the first one, he was so proud of himself! He hates reading, so it's a big sacrifice for him to tackle this challenge.
The boys are busy being boys. Eli is doing much better with the calcium problem, and it appears we have a pretty good handle on things in that arena. The doctor was concerned about his Vitamin D level being very high, but decided to watch that for the time being.
We planted part of our garden last weekend, as we had green bean sproutlings that were bursting out of their bags. It's a little early, but they seem to have transplanted well. We will be planting more veggies in the next month or so.
We have had an exciting spring so far. We have a nest of 4 Robins on our porch that are hatched and just about to take flight. We have been watching and studying them. On the other side of the porch, we have a pair of House Finches that should be having hatchlings any day now. We have decided that any day it is not raining this summer, we will be doinng something outside. And, we found out our DNR has tons of resources available to homeschoolers that they are sending us, so you might want to check into yours, if you haven't already. How is the Fenner time going?

Things I'm learning about sodium....

The following is a post I found that I forgot to publish! Oops! It prompted me to put in an original post about DS 2's health, leading to the reason for this post. Confused? Read the post on Ds2's health first, then read this one. ;)

Here is the info I've found that helps me understand labeling a little bit better that I thought you might be interested in:

Sodium free - Less than 5 mg per serving.

Very Low Sodium - 35 mg or less per serving.

Light in Sodium - 140 mg or less per serving than the reference amount*. (If the food is not "low in sodium" the statement "not a low sodium food" must appear on the same panel as the Nutrition Facts panel.)

Reduced or Less Sodium - At least 25% less per serving than reference amount.*

* this means, (I think), that if you were to compare the same product: 1 being "regular sodium" and the other being the "light or Reduced sodium". Think of it like Soy sauce. I know you have changed awhile back to the lower sodium Soy Sauce with the green label, simply because it tastes the same as the Soy sauce with the red label and has a lot less sodium.

So this is what I have to look for. Basically, unless I can't substitute an ingredient, I'm looking for the Very Low Sodium to Sodium free label. Hard to find! Even the health food stores, most of their products are not usually sodium free. It boils down to this: Make EVERYTHING homemade as absolutely much as possible. What I'm trying to learn is what things you can make up and package ahead of time to have on-hand for the busy days. It is a huge challenge, and although gets stressful, is sort of fun. I know, I must be crazy, but at least I have a good attitude in general. :) I must make all our own bread. I still buy store bread to have on hand, but am making bread in the machine my mother in law gave me. And, she said we could have her chest freezer so pray that they are able to bring it to us this wk! That would help HUGELY! Once I get an extra freezer, I am going to be doing the once-a-month cooking. I did a gigantic undertaking of making up a 37 day menu this weekend, and a grocery list for each week. A friend gave me a blank calendar and said once she buckled down and did it, it really helped. I plan on doing at least one more month (on paper), maybe two, and then we will pretty much stick to whatever is on which day for convenience sake. Sundays are always "down home cooking" days, Mondays are Soups/Stews, Tuesdays are Leftovers, Wednesdays are 'quick' food days because of church (which I can partially prepare on Tuesdays since they are leftover days and I'll have some extra time), Thursdays are Salad days, Fridays rotate between Italian/Mexican, and Saturdays are our Wild Card days. So whatever unique recipe I find, is what I plan. (ie: things we haven't tried yet like shrimp scampi or hobo pie. Not anything gross like liver or cow tongue. YUCK!!!) But then after I got this done, I had to tweak it because one week we ended up having too much red meat and another we had pork in some form almost the whole week. So I had to switch a few things. It has been a massive undertaking! I spent about 10 hours planning the menu and writing out the grocery lists for each week, then I spent about 5 hours grocery shopping on Saturday! Well, I had to get a food processor because I've almost broken my blender trying to make bread crumbs and things its not meant to do, so I had to get that from the Kitchen store at the mall, and I had to also get a good set of measuring cups & spoons because now that I'm doing soooo much cooking, I realize what I have are bits and pieces, which won't do. I also had to go to two health food stores to track down things like sodium free baking powder and soda, and Soy sauce substitute. I am determined to beat this thing and learn the most I can to help my boy and my family, though! It will not beat me!

Wait till you hear this....

Yesterday, DD had her follow-up appt with the Neurologist for her ADD/ADHD. This is a long letter, so if you don't get to read it for awhile, that's ok. I'm at a total loss as to what I can/should be doing for my daughter.
These are the things that the doctor decided:
1) DD's medicine needed to be slightly increased.
2) DD needs to see a behavioral therapist for counseling.
3) DD has now also been diagnosed with anxiety based on the doctor's observations of her and how I am describing different situations with her.
4) (And this one really gets me ticked) DD might need to have a "different choice for education" than homeschool!!!!! Can you believe it!? I just told myself to let it go at the time and not argue with the doctor. She said with DD being homeschooled she (dr) has no way of knowing if she is learning properly or how intelligent she is!!!!!!!! She (dr) says that if she were in public schools, they would do intelligence testing and she (dr) could use that information. I explained to her that DD would be getting tested in January (scantron) to help the teacher and I assess how she is doing with what is being taught and I barely got that out of my mouth when she said that wasn't good enough! And that's what she had just said! I also told her that there is formal state testing in March each year and because I didn't know the name of that test, she discredited that and said it wouldn't work either. Then she said after DD took the tests for me to bring the results to her.
(Following stuff may be repetative if you read other posts of mine) I also know that being in the inner city School District we live in, there's no way they are going to pay for some "intelligence testing" just because a doctor ordered it!!!! This is one of the poorest districts I have ever heard of, and I'm not trying to put myself (or kids) above others, but they don't even do hot lunches or have a kitchen in every school!!!! That is sub-standard to what I feel is "normal" and "acceptable" for this day and age. Also, they are still, as far as I know, bussing everyone from jr high and under every day, even those students that are within walking distance, because they don't want the children to get stuck in the crossfire -LITERALLY- of two gang wars right here in the city!!! I simply CANNOT send my daughter and WILLNOT send my daughter to public schools just because some doctor wants her to go!!!! In good conscience, I cannot send her into a literal shooting spree that might happen. ARGH! (**Note: This stuff about the school is not heresay, I have checked my facts sheerly because I could not believe what I had been hearing, and found that it was true!)
That's not to mention that comparing this school district to other school districts around here that are rated as "excellent" the one we live in is almost 2 full years behind - by that I mean that when a student I know was pulled out of 8th grade in the district we live in, she only tested at a 6th grade level in a neighboring school district! ARGH! Also, considering DD is having some learning difficulties, I feel that, paired with all this other stuff and she would go straight down the tubes!! I love homeschooling. Yes, it can be hard, but I know that I am giving her better schooling than what she would be getting otherwise. I'm pretty sure that if DD was going to B&M ("Brick and Mortar school), and she didn't pass a test, that the teacher wouldn't re-teach or continue to work with her until she DD picked it up. I have the ability to do that. And I know she won't be passed through to 3rd grade if she's not ready, but she can repeat (for instance) math, if she needs to and not be held back and bored in the other subjects.
I did inform the doctor that DD was getting regular help through Title 1 for her math, and that it is a state recognized program for children that struggle that is even in public schools.
Truthfully, she turned a deaf ear to me the first appointment in June when I told her that we homeschooled. You may know that kind of person. I call them uneducated about homeschool, and I don't think there's much you can do to convince them otherwise. And I don't think its worth my time, either. I didn't realize the scope of how much she was against homeschool until yesterday, though! She referred us to a counselor for the behavioral therapy that she (dr) thinks will be able to prescribe medicine and take over her entire care, thus keeping us from having to go back to that neurologist.
the #5) and las thing she said was that a "real teacher" would be able to better know what DD needs than I would. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!?! She must not have any children, or I'm quite sure she wouldn't have made such a callous comment!! In my book, nobody knows what's better for the welfare of the child than the parent! (provided the parent is a responsible, loving one that provides a good nurturing home, which obveously I am doing, or I wouldn't continually drive her an hour one way to these appointments!)

Ok. I feel better. At least a little bit. As always, I welcome comments. :)

Calling all Homeschoolers....

In the Trumbull County, Ohio area. After researching online for two hours, I have come to the conclusion that there seems to be no co-op groups here in Trumbull County. Are there any other homeschool groups in Trumbull County?? I have found some in Youngstown, Akron/Kent, Geauga, Lake, Ashtabula Counties, but nothing right in Trumbull County. I know my DD would love to get together for field trips, study groups or just to hang out, and I'm sure other parents would appreciate it as well. I really don't know how to start a co-op, but I would like to have one in Trumbull County so there is minimal travel. (Unless we choose to for a field trip, of course.) I know this is an "out there" thought considering this day-and-age, but if you are interested in getting together, please contact me via email at: seeker4christ@gmail.com and we can get acquainted via email and possibly set up a homeschooling group of some sort right here in Trumbull County. I can verify who I am through my church affiliation if you are hesitant. Contact me for more info.

An Editorial Retraction of sorts

It has come to my attention that many of the things I was lead to believe about President Elect Obama are indeed false. Please check this link. Obama may not be as scary of a person as everyone thinks he is. Although I still do not agree on most of his answers to the national issues, I feel a little better. I know, it is Snopes, but come on, people. I have found legitimate answers to many other urban legends and followed them up further and found Snopes to be a very reliable website. I apologize if I've offended anyone. Not by my opinions, for by and large they stay the same, but if I have mislead anyone into thinking something untruthful about Mr. Obama. Thoughts anyone?
